Description

Item :
Graceful sculpture in hard-paste, vitrified, polychrome porcelain, entirely decorated by hand, depicting a couple of children in period clothing with fruit and flowers. Signed under the base with an ancient mark depicting a crowned “N” in blue under glaze. The sculpture is in full Liberty – Art Nouveau style and can be dated towards the end of the 19th century, around 1880. The evident patina that covers the object confirms this dating, note for example the encrusted and hard dirt stains under the base . Under the base there is also part of an ancient wax stamp, as was the case for porcelains belonging to some important collections. The porcelain with which the sculpture is made is massive, heavy and rich in kaolin. The floral decorations on the robes are particularly beautiful, entirely hand-made with the tip of a brush, typical of the Meissen sculptures of the 1700s, which Ernest Bohne has always been inspired by.

Information on the artist and/or manufacturer:
The sculpture is not Italian, as one might think, it has nothing to do with Capodimonte, which is easily deduced especially from the style and faces of the two children, but instead it is a German sculpture and the brand is the one used in the late 19th century from the manufacture of Ernst Bohne & Sohne, a Thuringian manufacture, known internationally for the quality and beauty of its porcelain creations, later absorbed by Rudolstadt. In the last photo we have put historical notes of the manufacturing and photos of some of the numerous brands used. The factory was founded in 1854 and remained active until 1945, the year of its definitive absorption with Rudolstadt. The brands with the crowned N, like the one present under the proposed sculpture, are among the first and oldest used.
